Mary
MARY KELSEY

Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner,
B Phys Therapy

Mary is a certified practitioner in the Feldenkrais Method® and Physiotherapy. She obtained her certification as a Feldenkrais Practitioner in 2003 following study in New York and Sydney after working as a physiotherapist for twenty years primarily assisting people who had severe injuries and disabilities to move into their desired activity and work.

At YNT, Mary’s experience as a physiotherapist informs her approach as a Feldenkrais Practitioner to assist you to heal injuries and ‘dis-ease’ that affect the way you move.  The Feldenkrais Method is about learning how to change yourself from the inside out - you become more aware of your habits in movement and posture as Mary facilitates and organizes your movement with you. You can feel places where you don’t use yourself so well and, by learning how to integrate all of your body in your movement, you increase your comfort, strength and balance in everyday functional activities.

For example, through hands-on lessons called Functional Integration, you learn fluent and organized movement of all parts of your body to assist with pain and injuries in particular places. The head, eyes, pelvis and feet feel connected better to allow structures above and below to function more happily.

Mary works primarily through your nervous system with very gentle, precise, ingenious and sophisticated movement patterns that become surprisingly EASY!  It's not like usual exercise; it's about the brain and nervous system - a bit like learning to walk.  Once you are more organised, strengthening is easier to attain.

Her methods, though they may feel very gentle, can bring about similar results to standard physiotherapy techniques but with a whole-of-body awareness built in.  As we grow older we often come to believe that sore muscles and stiff joints are what we have become.  The Feldenkrais Method is an excellent way to embody the youthfulness that is being hidden within you - removing the masking effects of ineffectual stuck habits.

Mary also holds Awareness Through Movement® group classes in West End (Brisbane) on a Thursday evening. You can find out more about these by calling the YNT.

Sandra
SANDRA VENABLES

B HSc (Homœopathy)

Sandra always had a strong desire to help others achieve their optimum in health though initially working as a Food Scientist.  As an aromatherapist, she had a ‘light bulb moment’ that homoeopathy encapsulated philosophies she had inherently understood all her life and supported her motto of, “Using nature to promote self-healing”.

Since qualifying as a homoeopath in 2005, she has been applying her training and skills to her patients who, in many cases, turned to homoeopathy after other therapies failed to achieve the desired results.  Homoeopathy has a 250 year history as a non-invasive, gentle method of treating the whole person.  It can be used both as a preventative - strengthening weaknesses in the immune system - and as a treatment for an existing illness or condition.

The first consultation, which can last up to 2-hours, takes a detailed physiological, psychological and family history of the patient as all these play an important role in the treatment.  Follow-up and acute-condition consultations are shorter.  Medication is usually in the form of liquid or pillules which, though often taken for only a short period, can have remedial effects, lasting in many cases for several weeks, months or even years.

As one of the underlying principles of homoeopathy is to ensure the patient is truly unwell before beginning treatment, Sandra may suggest a consultation with one of YNT’s naturopaths who can ascertain if your diet and lifestyle are well balanced, enabling homoeopathy to then play a pivotal role in your return to health.

Margo
MARGO CLOWES
Dip. RM

Margo has been practising at the clinic since November 2007 as a Massage Therapist and completed her Diploma in Remedial Massage Therapy through the Australian College of Natural Medicine.

Margo brings to the clinic a strong conviction of the importance regular massage needs to play in today's society where stress related, psychological and physiological health problems feature so prevalently. As well as delivering relaxation massages, she has attained proficiency in various modalities including postural assessment, corrective exercises, deep tissue, post-natal pregnancy massage, sports, muscle energy techniques, and lymphatic drainage; a light, gentle form of massage which is designed to decongest and enhance the flow of lymph in the body. She has found this form of treatment effective when used in conjunction with health programmes requiring the cleansing, relaxing and energising of the bodies system.

Margo also specialises in myofascial release; a treatment that involves stretching muscular and fascial tissue. The techniques applied commonly are very light, with gentle sustained pressure yet the benefits have shown reduction of muscle tightness, elongation of muscles and stimulation of sensory receptors.

Margo aims to provide an atmosphere where you can relax and unwind. Each treatment is tailored to suit your unique and individual needs, be they for remedial health care, or pampering body and soul. Health Rebates Apply.

Penny Chenoweth
TOM GU

Dip RM

Tom holds a Diploma specialises in deep tissue remedial massage that is used to treat sports injuries, neck and back pain, problems with the shoulder (including frozen shoulder) and the feet as well as headache resulting from muscle tension.

Tom’s work on trigger points in the fascia reduces muscular spasm and pain while releasing local toxins, loosening impacted nerve endings and promoting blood circulation to the areas being treated.

He uses the traditional Chinese therapy of cupping as an adjunct or alternative to massage. Cupping can penetrate the affected tissues up to four inches. The cup is oiled so that it glides over the skin and releases tension and congestion. After this the cup is left stationary for 10-15 minutes at particular points and, during this time, the patient can often experience a deep state of relaxation and afterwards a feeling of lightness and flexibility.

Cupping is particularly beneficial for:

  • Activating the lymphatic system
  • Releasing toxins
  • Assisting in clearing blockages in the veins, arteries and capillaries
  • Improving blood circulation and skin condition

RACHAEL SHARP
Dip.RM

Rachael completed her Diploma of Remedial Massage at the Australian Institute of Applied Science in 2008 and is a member of the AAMT (Australian Association of Massage Therapists).

In 2005 she began pursuing her studies as a massage therapist with a passion to learn techniques that will help people on their journey to find well-being through healthy, pain free, relaxed muscles.

Rachael’s more preferred technique is remedial massage with a focus on cross fibre mobilization - a technique that treats the connective tissue surrounding all the muscles, bones and organs of the body. The treatment of this tissue encourages the healthy function of muscles and Rachael has seen some very positive results in her clients with long term muscular pain.

In addition to remedial massage, Rachael can also offer relaxation massage, advanced deep tissue, stretching techniques and structural alignment assessment.

Rachael feels privileged to be a part of people’s lives in the capacity of a massage therapist. Her focus is to identify with her clients what results they would like to see from the treatment and then develop a treatment plan to work towards those goals.
